Five models

Kei truck models we import

The Subaru Sambar is our first pick: the smoothest ride and the highest US sold prices on Bring a Trailer in 2025 and 2026. The Honda Acty is the one Michigan searches for most. The Hijet Jumbo suits taller drivers.

What they're for

Small truck, real work

Farms and orchards

A flat bed at waist height with sides that fold down on three sides, and 4WD with low range for wet fields.

Hunting and timber land

Narrow enough for two-tracks and gates, light enough not to rut a trail, and it carries a deer or a blind.

Cottages, resorts and campgrounds

Maintenance runs, firewood, docks and trash without a full-size truck.

Grounds crews and light plowing

Campus, municipal and golf-course crews use them daily; with a small blade, 4WD trucks clear drives and paths.

Before you buy a kei truck

  • Road use is set by your state. Michigan registers 25-year-old kei trucks for on-road use. Indiana has a mini-truck registration; Ohio limits them to roads posted at 35 mph or less.
  • Kei trucks are goods vehicles, so US duty is 25%. Our prices include it. Prices are quoted before Michigan's 6% sales tax, title and plates.
  • They are built for 45 to 55 mph back roads, not highways.
  • Build month, not model year: A truck must be 25 years old by its date of manufacture. A truck listed as "2001" may not qualify yet, so we confirm the build month on every one before we bid.
  • Accident-repair history: Japanese listings flag repaired trucks (shūfukureki). We tell you if a truck has it, and skip it unless you want it at a lower price.
  • Rust underneath: Many affordable 4WD trucks come from snowy regions such as Hokkaido and Nagano. We get underbody photos and the auction sheet before bidding.
  • Timing belt: The Sambar EN07, Acty E07A and Carry F6A engines use timing belts. Unless there is a record, we budget a belt service before delivery.

Questions

Kei truck FAQ

  • Are kei trucks legal in the USA?

Kei trucks 25 years and older can be imported. Road use depends on your state. Michigan titles and registers kei trucks and microvans 25 years and older for on-road use if they were built for road use; younger ones can only be titled off-road. Check your own state before you buy.

  • Can I drive a kei truck on the road outside Michigan?

It depends on the state. Indiana has a registration for mini trucks. Ohio limits them to roads posted at 35 mph or less. Wisconsin generally allows them. Rules change, so check with your state's DMV before you buy; we supply the federal import documents either way.

  • How much do kei trucks cost?

On Bring a Trailer in 2025 and 2026, the median sold price for each model's kei trucks and vans was about $6,900 for the Suzuki Carry, $7,900 for the Honda Acty, $8,400 for the Daihatsu Hijet and $9,100 for the Subaru Sambar. Clean, low-mileage 4WD trucks sell for more. Prices are quoted before Michigan's 6% sales tax, title and plates.

  • Which kei truck should I buy?

For most buyers, a 4WD manual Subaru Sambar or Honda Acty. The Sambar is the smoothest on rough ground; the Acty is the most common. The Hijet Jumbo suits taller drivers, and the Carry has the deepest US parts support.

  • Can I buy a brand new kei truck?

Not for road use in the US. New kei trucks don't meet US safety standards, so only trucks 25 years and older can be imported and registered for the road.

  • How fast does a kei truck go?

Most 660cc kei trucks are happiest at 45 to 55 mph. They are built for farm lanes, hunting land, campgrounds and town errands, not interstates.

  • Are kei trucks a good buy?

For property, farm and light work they are hard to beat: 4WD with low range, a flat bed that folds down on three sides, good fuel use and a size that fits through gates and trails. They are not highway vehicles.
